British royalty and nobility of the 14th and 15th centuries kept packs of miniature hounds of this breed. When these hounds were kept less in favor of Foxhounds, local farmers continued to keep them for hunting hare and quail. Dogs of this breed were imported into the United States in 1876 and accepted as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1884.
