Beagle Dog

Beagle Dog belongs to the Hound group, and he is believed to have sprung from the Foxhound. Beagles look similar to Foxhounds, but have shorter legs and longer ears. Like all dogs of the Hound group, Beagles have an excellent sense of smell and good hearing. Today, Beagles are used effectively in drug detection missions.

Beagle Dogs are medium-sized, standing 13-16 inches tall at the withers and weighing 20-25 pounds. The Beagle has a broad and slightly domed skull, and straight muzzle. The nose is black, and it has wide nostrils. The ears are soft, wide and pendulous, and the eyes are brown and thoughtful. Beagles have a short and smooth coat that comes in various combinations of black, tan and white. The feet are small and round, and the tail is long and upright, but not curled over the back. White-tipped tail is more preferable.

Beagles are very kind-hearted and merry dogs. They are very communicative, and they do okay with other hound dogs and are never short with strangers. They enjoy company and hate boredom or loneliness. Well socialized Beagle Dogs are tolerant of non-canine household pets, but some dogs may chase them. For this reason, they should not be left around non-canine pets without supervision. Beagles are great companions for well-behaved children, because they love to spend their time playing in the yard. Beagles are very active indoors, and lack of attention can result in noisy or destructive behavior. Bored Beagles can be disturbingly vocal. When hunting, Beagles signal the presence of game by producing protracted baying calls, which is not typical of other dogs.

Beagles love to walk, and they cannot do without fresh air. However, they should not be walked without a leash, since they often catch smells and follow them. In this situation, little can be done to regain control over a Beagle Dog, since what is their strong point on a hunt becomes their weak point during a walk. This trait can pose serious difficulties for young dog owners, because this makes them a little hard to train. Experienced people know ways of getting over this. Beagles can be willful at times, but they do not respond to abusive training. They make good companions only on condition that their owners are patient and consistent with them.

Beagles are very healthy dogs, and they rarely fall ill. Purebred dogs, if cared for properly, can keep you a company for 12-14 years, and they retain their vivacity well into adulthood. These dogs enjoy tracking games and puzzles, or anything that keeps their mind working. Field hunting in company of other hounds is the best stimulus for every Beagle Dog.
